2019 George & Donna Burdick Business Award - Applied Materials

Applied Materials is the leader in materials engineering solutions used to produce virtually every new chip and advanced display in the world. Founded in 1967, Applied Materials has operated in Santa Clara for 50 years and established its global headquarters at the corner of Bowers Avenue and Central Expressway in 1973.

Applied's technologies help make innovations like smartphones, flat screen TVs and solar panels more affordable and accessible to consumers and businesses around the world. An innovation powerhouse, Applied Materials engineers and technologists apply on average for more than 4 new patents every day... including Saturday and Sunday. Today with more than $17 billion in revenue and over 22,000 employees in 17 countries, Applied Materials still calls Santa Clara home.

In addition to employing nearly 1,000 Santa Clara citizens, Applied is a top purchaser of green energy from Silicon Valley Power, as well as spending hundreds of millions of dollars in purchases from local Santa Clara and Silicon Valley businesses.

Since locating to the City of Santa Clara, Applied Materials has been a stalwart supporter of the community. Applied has been a long-time partner not only to the Mission City Community Fund, but to local institutions such as the Triton Museum and Santa Clara University, as well as making significant gifts to Santa Clara City Library and the Ulistac Natural Area. Each year, Applied Materials and its Foundation invest nearly $11 million dollars in charitable organizations around the world – with more than half staying right here in Silicon Valley. Local examples include Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties – where Applied is the largest corporate contributor to our Food Bank – the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, SVCreates, the Tech Museum, and Environmental Volunteers – all of which help make Santa Clara and Silicon Valley a better place to live.

Applied Materials has been a long-time supporter of civic and communities causes and is recognized as being one of Silicon Valley's leading corporate citizens and top philanthropists. It is this commitment and corporate leadership that makes them worthy of receiving the 2019 George & Donna Burdick Business Award.
