2020 Austen Warburton Community Service Award

MCCF honors extraordinary volunteers Craig & Linda Connelly on Nov. 7th

Santa Clara, Calif. - 9/21/2020 - At our first-ever virtual charity event Greater Giving Local Focus on November 7th starting at 7:00 p.m., Mission City Community Fund will present the 2020 Austen Warburton Community Service Award to Craig & Linda Connelly for their dedication to helping young people engage in organized sports in our communities for 50+ years.

Craig and Linda Connelly can be found at Townsend Field keeping Santa Clara Lions Youth Football & Cheer Club at its highest level serving over 650 kids per year. Their program sponsors 30 flag teams, a conditioning camp, spring and fall tackle teams, and five cheer squads yearly. The Connelly's value safety measures for young players and cheerleaders with care, preparation, training techniques, well-educated coaching and learning at its best. Laying the foundation of a strong work ethic, responsibility, leadership, and perseverance for kids that will help them throughout their life and as children develop their athletic talents, they build character, values and confidence through teamwork. The Lions teams have won 43 League Championships, 38 Division Championships, and 29 undefeated seasons over the past five decades. Craig and Linda's positive motivational involvement spans from the development of rules, regulations and scholastic programs within the National Pop Warner Association, Pacific Northwest Region, and Peninsula League; author of rules & standards, conducting fund-raisers and organizing committees, founders for the Regional & Peninsula Scholastic Review Boards, cheer coach, team mom, referee commissioner, and many positions within Santa Clara Little League and the Santa Clara Lions Football & Cheer Club; organizing coaching clinics for local teams to showcase how to do things right, from techniques for success and safety, to sportsmanship, hosting many Regional and National Championship events and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life at Townsend Field in Santa Clara.

"Craig and Linda have provided countless hours of time and dedication to Bay Area youth," shared Kevin Moore, MCCF Board member. "They are extraordinary volunteers with passion and caring for each and every one of the players and cheerleaders. The training and direction they provide is valuable not only now, but years from now when these young people become adults."

Working together towards one common goal helps give children a sense of belonging and forging friendships on Townsend Field often lasts a lifetime. Cheering for every member of the team helps everyone feel accepted and valued. Craig and Linda teach children how to work well with others, something they will have to do no matter what path in life they choose and learning these lessons on the field is great for building resilient and well-rounded kids, making the Connelly's deserving of the 2020 Austen Warburton Community Service Award.
